What it is

What Clogged Drain Service Involves

A clogged drain is a full or nearly full blockage in one line. It’s different from a slow drain, which is a narrowing that hasn’t closed yet. By the time water stops going down, the clog is usually packed tight, and pushing on it with a plunger can make it worse if the blockage is further down than you think.

We see the same handful of clogs over and over in central PA homes: hair and soap in tubs, grease and food in kitchen sinks, wipes and paper in toilets, and mud or debris in basement floor drains. Each one sits in a different spot and needs a different tool, so the first thing we do is figure out where it actually is.

In your words

What Callers Tell Us

These are the kinds of things people say when they call us about clogged drain service. If one sounds familiar, we have handled it many times.

“I have tried everything to unclog it and it is not working”

“the clog is a lot deeper than I thought”

“my kitchen sink is clogged and full of water”

“it needs to be snaked out”

“I have a clogged drain I just cannot get open”

Why it happens

Common Causes in Central PA Homes

The wrong things going down

Wipes labeled flushable, cooking grease, coffee grounds, rice and pasta all swell or stick. They’re behind most of the clogs we clear.

A partial clog that finally closed

A drain that’s been slowing for weeks usually doesn’t fail suddenly. It closes the rest of the way when one more thing goes down.

Problems further down the line

A clog in one fixture can actually be a blockage in the branch line it shares with another fixture, or in the main.

Warning signs

Signs You Need Clogged Drain Service

Standing water that won’t drain

The clearest sign. The line is fully blocked somewhere past the fixture.

Water rising in a different fixture

Running the sink and seeing the tub fill means those fixtures share a blocked line.

The plunger moves water but nothing clears

The clog is past the trap, deeper than a plunger can reach.

Bubbling or gurgling

Air trapped behind the clog escapes back up through the drain.

Clogs in the same drain every few weeks

Something in the line, like buildup or a sag, keeps catching debris.

How we do it

Our Clogged Drain Service Process, Step by Step

1. We figure out where the clog is

One fixture or several? Upstairs or downstairs? That points to the trap, the branch line or the main.

2. We protect your space

Drop cloths down and the fixture opened up carefully, especially with standing water.

3. We clear it at the source

Hand auger for traps, a drum machine for branch lines, and a larger cable or jetter if the main is involved.

4. We check the rest of the line

We run water through nearby fixtures so we know the whole line is open, not just the spot we worked on.

5. We tell you what caused it

If it was a habit, we’ll say so. If it was buildup or a pipe problem, we’ll explain your options.

Choosing the Right Method

Most single fixture clogs clear with a hand or drum auger. For kitchen lines with years of grease, an auger often punches a hole that closes up again in a few weeks, which is why we sometimes recommend jetting the line instead. When a toilet clog won’t clear with a closet auger, it can mean something solid is stuck in the trap, and the toilet may need to come up for a few minutes.

Local know-how

Clogged Drain Service Across Central Pennsylvania

In York and Lancaster rowhomes, fixtures on different floors often share a single stack, so a clog in one place can show up somewhere unexpected. In split levels around Hershey and Camp Hill, the lowest bathroom is usually the first to back up. Knowing the layout helps us find the clog faster.

What You Can Try First, and When to Call

Try a cup plunger on sinks and a flange plunger on toilets, with enough water to cover the cup. A cheap plastic hair snake clears most tub clogs. If two tries don’t move it, stop, especially with a toilet, because forcing it can crack the porcelain or push the clog into the main.

FAQ

Clogged Drain Service FAQs

How much does it cost to unclog a drain?

Most single fixture clogs are $150 to $350. Kitchen lines with grease run slightly higher, and a main line clog is $250 to $750.

Why is my drain clogged again after I cleared it?

Usually the clog was punched through but the buildup around it stayed. A deeper cleaning or jetting removes the rest.

Is it the drain or the main line?

If only one fixture is affected, it’s usually that drain. If two or more back up together, especially the lowest ones, it’s likely the main.

Should I use chemical drain cleaner?

We don’t recommend it. It rarely clears a full clog and it damages older pipes, and it’s hazardous for whoever works on the drain next.

Can a clog damage my pipes?

A clog that sits for a long time can, especially in old cast iron. Standing water and debris speed up corrosion.

How fast can you come out?

For a full clog we aim for same-day service. Call and we’ll tell you the soonest time we can be there.
