What it is

What Hydro Jetting Involves

Hydro jetting pushes water through a specialized nozzle at several thousand PSI. Forward jets cut through the blockage, and rear jets scrub the pipe walls and pull debris back toward the access point. The result is a pipe that’s clean from wall to wall, which is something a cable can’t do.

It matters a lot in central PA because of the pipes we work with. Hard water leaves mineral scale inside lines across the region, older homes have cast iron that roughens with age, and clay laterals invite roots. Snaking those lines often opens a small channel that closes again within weeks. Jetting removes the buildup itself.

In your words

What Callers Tell Us

These are the kinds of things people say when they call us about hydro jetting. If one sounds familiar, we have handled it many times.

“the drain clogs again a few weeks after it is cleared”

“grease keeps building back up in the kitchen line”

“roots come back in the line every season”

“snaking opens it for a day then it slows right back down”

Why it happens

Common Causes in Central PA Homes

Grease coating kitchen lines

Years of grease build a thick layer on the pipe wall. A cable goes through it, but jetting removes it.

Hard water scale

Minerals from central PA’s hard water narrow pipes slowly until they clog easily.

Root masses in laterals

Roots regrow after cabling. Jetting with a root nozzle cuts them back much further.

Warning signs

Signs You Need Hydro Jetting

The same drain clogs every few months

Buildup on the pipe wall keeps catching debris.

Snaking only works for a week or two

The cable is punching through, not cleaning.

Slow kitchen drains in a busy home or restaurant

Classic grease buildup.

Roots showing up on camera

Jetting clears roots more thoroughly than a cable.

An older home with cast iron or clay

These pipes benefit most from a full scouring.

How we do it

Our Hydro Jetting Process, Step by Step

1. We camera the line first

We confirm the cause and check the pipe is sound enough to jet.

2. We pick the nozzle

Different nozzles for grease, scale and roots, matched to the pipe size.

3. We jet in passes

We work the line from the access point outward, flushing debris back as we go.

4. We camera it again

You see the before and after, so you know the pipe is actually clean.

5. We suggest a schedule if needed

Restaurants and homes with heavy roots often benefit from jetting every 12 to 24 months.

Choosing the Right Method

Snaking costs less per visit, usually $150 to $350, and it’s the right call for a one time clog. Jetting costs more once but cleans the whole pipe. If you’re snaking the same line every few months, a single jetting usually costs less over a year. We won’t jet a pipe that a camera shows is cracked or collapsing, because high pressure can make that worse. In that case we’ll explain repair options first.

Local know-how

Hydro Jetting Across Central Pennsylvania

Restaurants along the Carlisle Pike, the Route 30 corridor and downtown Lancaster and York keep us busy with grease lines. On the residential side, older homes in Harrisburg, Hershey and Lebanon with clay laterals and heavy roots are where jetting makes the biggest difference.

What You Can Try First, and When to Call

Rental jetters run at a fraction of professional pressure and won’t clear heavy roots or hardened scale. Without a camera, it’s easy to blast a weak spot in an old pipe. For a main line, it’s usually not worth the risk. Keeping grease out of the sink is the best thing you can do to avoid needing jetting at all.

FAQ

Hydro Jetting FAQs

How much does hydro jetting cost?

Most residential jobs cost $400 to $900. A main line with heavy roots or a commercial grease line runs $800 to $2,000.

Is hydro jetting safe for old pipes?

For sound clay, cast iron and PVC, yes. For a pipe that’s already cracked, no, which is why we run a camera first.

How long does it last?

Much longer than snaking, often a year or more for grease and scale. Roots regrow, so heavy root lines may need yearly service.

How long does a jetting job take?

Most residential jobs take one to two hours.

Is jetting better than snaking?

For repeat clogs, grease, scale and roots, yes. For a single soft clog, snaking is enough and costs less.

Do restaurants need regular jetting?

Most do. A schedule every 3 to 12 months, depending on volume, prevents backups during service.
