What it is

What Main Line Drain Cleaning Involves

Your main line, sometimes called the sewer lateral, is the single pipe that carries everything from every fixture in the house out to the city sewer or your septic tank. When it clogs, nothing can leave the house. Water backs up into whatever fixture sits lowest, usually a basement floor drain, a first floor tub or a toilet.

In central Pennsylvania the main line is often the oldest pipe in the house. Plenty of homes from the 1950s and earlier still have clay or Orangeburg laterals. Clay joints let roots in, and Orangeburg, a tar paper pipe from the mid 1900s, slowly deforms. Both cause main line clogs that come back unless the line is cleaned thoroughly and checked.

In your words

What Callers Tell Us

These are the kinds of things people say when they call us about main line drain cleaning. If one sounds familiar, we have handled it many times.

“the drain between my house and the sewer line out at the street is clogged”

“it starts upstairs in the master bath and backs up in the kitchen”

“more than one drain is backing up at the same time”

“the floor drain in the basement is overflowing”

Why it happens

Common Causes in Central PA Homes

Tree roots at the joints

The most common cause in older central PA neighborhoods. Roots grow into clay joints and form a mat that catches waste.

Grease and wipes building up

Everything the house sends down ends up here. Grease and wipes collect at bends and low spots.

A sag or belly in the pipe

Soil settles and the pipe dips. Water and solids sit in the low spot and build into a clog.

Warning signs

Signs You Need Main Line Drain Cleaning

Several drains backing up together

The surest sign of a main line clog. A single fixture clog doesn’t affect the rest of the house.

Water coming up the basement floor drain

Waste rises at the lowest point first.

Toilet bubbles when the washer drains

Water from the washer can’t get past the blockage, so it pushes air back through the toilet.

Tub fills when you flush

The clog is downstream of both fixtures, in the main.

A wet patch or smell in the yard

Can mean the line is blocked and leaking, or cracked.

How we do it

Our Main Line Drain Cleaning Process, Step by Step

1. We locate the cleanout

Usually a capped pipe in the basement, the yard or along a wall. If there isn’t one, we use a toilet or a roof vent.

2. We clear the line with the right machine

A large sectional cable with a cutting head for roots, or a jetter for grease and scale.

3. We camera the line

We run a camera from the house to the street to see what caused it and whether the pipe is damaged.

4. We show you the footage

You see the roots, the belly or the crack yourself, so you can decide on next steps with real information.

5. We recommend a plan

If it was a one off clog, you’re done. If roots or a sag will bring it back, we’ll lay out maintenance or repair options.

Choosing the Right Method

A cable with a root cutting head clears most main line clogs and is the faster, cheaper option. If roots are heavy or grease has coated the pipe, hydro jetting cuts the roots back further and scours the walls, so the line stays clear longer. On a line with a crack or a collapsed section, we won’t jet hard until a camera confirms it’s safe, because high pressure can make a weak spot worse.

Local know-how

Main Line Drain Cleaning Across Central Pennsylvania

Mature trees line a lot of streets in Lancaster, York, Lebanon and Carlisle, and many of those homes still have original clay laterals. That combination makes root intrusion the most common main line problem we see. If your main backs up every year or two, a yearly cleaning is usually far cheaper than an emergency call.

What You Can Try First, and When to Call

There isn’t much you can safely do yourself with a main line clog. Stop running water so you don’t add to the backup. Don’t use chemicals, they sit in the line and can burn whoever opens it. If you know where your cleanout is, clear the area around it so we can get straight to work.

FAQ

Main Line Drain Cleaning FAQs

How do I know if it’s the main line?

If more than one fixture backs up at once, especially the lowest ones like a basement drain or first floor tub, it’s almost always the main.

How much does main line cleaning cost?

Usually $250 to $600 with a cleanout, and $350 to $750 without one. Heavy roots with jetting and a camera can run $600 to $1,400.

Why does my main line keep clogging?

Roots, a sag in the pipe, or an old Orangeburg or clay line. A camera inspection tells you which one.

Do I need a cleanout?

It’s not required, but it makes every future service call faster and cheaper. Many older central PA homes don’t have one.

Can roots be removed permanently?

Not with cleaning alone. Cleaning clears them, but they grow back. Regular cleaning, or a repair to the joints, keeps them out.

Is a main line backup an emergency?

If sewage is coming into the house, yes. Stop using water and call us.
